Abstract. On November 25, 2022, the International scientific conference «Ukraine – Latin America: 30 years of cooperation. To the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Ukrainian scientist Yuriy Knorozov» was held on the basis of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of the Faculty of History of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. This conference brought together dozens of scientists from all over the world and guests from diplomatic institutions, state authorities and public representatives.
The conference was dedicated to the memory of the legendary scientist from Kharkiv who deciphered the Mayan script. This event is significant for developing Latin American studies in Ukraine and strengthening Ukraine’s relations with Latin American countries. Furthermore, it is very relevant at the time when Ukraine defends its independence and unites the entire democratic world. The co-organizers of the event were the Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies «Casa Iberoamericana», the student initiative group «Wind of Changes UA», the NGO «Ukrainian Student League», and the Student Parliament of the University.
The participants were greeted by invited guests, including Volodymyr Bugrov – rector of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Oksana Dramaretska – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Mexico, Norton de Andrade Mello Rapesta – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brazil to Ukraine, Olga Beatriz García Guillaume – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico to Ukraine, Ivan Shynkarenko – People’s Deputy of Ukraine, Ksenia Smyrnova – Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work (International Cooperation) Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Oleg Mashevskyi – Head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign countries of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Associate professor, senior epigraphist of the archeological projects of Palenque (Mexico), Altar de Sacrificios (Guatemala), Maya Hieroglyphic Database Project (USA) Yuriy Polyukhovych, Nataliya Shevchenko – Associate professor of department of modern and contemporary history, head of the Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies «Casa Iberoamericana» on the basis of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
The conference was held in three sections: Historical and cultural heritage and civilizational potential of the region of Latin America and the Caribbean (moderators: Associate Professor, Ph. D. (History) Victoria Pilkevych and student Mykhailo Hibert), Actual problems of the history of the countries of the Latin American region in the 16th–early 21st centuries (moderators: Associate Professor, Ph.D. in History Nataliya Shevchenko and student Ivan Fechko), Ukraine’s relations with the countries of Latin America. Ukrainian diaspora in Latin American countries (moderators: Associate Professor, Ph. D. (History) Olga Sukhobokova, student Eduard Kuzmenko).
After the active discussion, the conference participants came to the conclusion that the Russian historiography myths about the positioning of Yuri Knorozov, a Kharkiv resident, as a Russian scientist do not stand up to scrutiny. Definitely, the legacy of the scientist belongs to Ukrainian and world science. Attention was also paid to the study of such topical issues as the relations of the region’s states with Ukraine. They in particular touched upon the problems of supporting our state in the fight against full-scale Russian armed aggression, supporting the Ukrainian position in international organizations and countering Russian propaganda in Latin America.
Key words: history of Latin America, history of international relations, Ukraine-Latin America, Yuriy Knorozov, international conference, scientific diplomacy, Russian-Ukrainian war.
