The article deals with the transatlantic vector of the foreign policy activity of the center-right presidents of France J. Chirac and N. Sarkozy from 1995 to 2012. Particular attention is paid to the dynamics of the development of french-american cooperation within NATO. After the end of the “cold war”, the collapse of the USSR in place of the bipolar world came unipolar world. There was the need to reform NATO, because the main purpose of the organization lost former relevance. For France, it was an opportunity to declare itself as the power with the global responsibility. The USA did not want to lose leadership in NATO. If the period of Chirac’s presidency was marked by the crisis in relations with the military operation in Iraq, the presidency of the atlantist N. Sarkozy contributed to the elimination of the majority of the contradictions and the return of France to NATO command structures. It is established that J. Chirac and N. Sarkozy in their relations with the USA and NATO were guided by gaullist principles. They put french national interests in the first place. During this period, France advocated the reform of NATO, for the establishment of an equal partnership of all members of the organization, for the european partners to gain greater independence from the USA. The results of the presidents activities in the field of transatlantic cooperation can be considered relatively successful, because France retained the special status within NATO.

Key words: NATO, crisis in Iraq, J. Chirac, N. Sarkozy, Security Council, gaullist principles.
